The Wateree Cup and our Camden Polo League matches take place at the historic Kirkwood Polo Field on Polo Lane in Camden. The Wateree Hounds are proud stewards of this property that once bore witness to the Battle of Hobkirk Hill. In later years, the field became the centerpiece of one of the Southeast’s most prominent resorts, welcoming industry magnates, political figures, and celebrities of their era.
Kirkwood Polo Field’s eventual acquisition by the American Battlefield Trust—in partnership with the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust—marked a major victory for battlefield conservation across the state. With support from the American Battlefield Protection Program, the South Carolina Conservation Bank, the Palmetto Conservation Foundation, and generous donors, this protected land ensures we never forget a crucial chapter of America’s fight for freedom.
In 2023, the Wateree Hounds partnered with the Trust to launch a polo revival initiative. Under this agreement, we maintain the Kirkwood Polo Field and its facilities in exchange for field access. Our Polo Development Program and Camden Polo League are funded in part by generous donations and proceeds from special events like our annual Wateree Cup.
As the only active polo field within an hour of Camden, Kirkwood remains the cornerstone of the sport within South Carolina. We consider it a profound honor to preserve the field’s legacy as a living testament to Camden’s rich and multifaceted heritage, ensuring it remains an active sports and community venue for generations to come.

Polo isn’t a single-day event in Camden. Each January, the Wateree Hounds host an immersive, week-long celebration of Southern sporting heritage known as Sporting Week. This event brings together fox hunting and a carefully curated lineup of optional pursuits—including polo.
Our optional, à la carte add-on experience to Sporting Week is known as Polo in the Pines. The activity features a welcoming environment with amateur play for both skilled players and individuals new to the polo sport. All equipment is provided.
